External Philanthropy
On February 23, over 50 Betas headed down to Kane Hall for a screening of the award winning movie, Darius Goes West. The documentary chronicles the travel of Darius Weems, a 20 year-old from Alabama with Duchene Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). DMD is the most common and most severe form of muscular dystrophy. It is the number one genetic killer of children, striking one in 3,500 boys worldwide. There is no treatment, and those with the disease die by their early 20s.
John Schneider, Beta Omega ’59, initially alerted and invited us to the event. In addition to being a benefit for Darius, it was also one for Aidan Leffler, John’s 5-year-old grandson. Aidan was diagnosed with DMD three years ago. The chapter was so moved by the presentation and documentary that we made a contribution to Aidan’s medical care fund.
Internal Philanthropy
With Relay for Life just around the corner, Beta Omega held its annual Dragon Cup to raise money for cancer research. The annual soccer tournament had a great turnout with over half of the sororities participating. In addition to the soccer tournament, the sororities enjoyed a skit night, championship pasta feed, and a movie night on the sun deck. Internal Philanthropy Chair Josh Trager stepped up and planned out the weeklong festivities, which raised over $1,000 for the Relay for Life team.
